Social Medicine

Practitioners in preventive medicine specialize in the health of people and defined populations; they protect and maintain health as well as prevent disease, disability and premature death. The practice may involve management and assessment of health surrounding environmental or occupational factors. The field of preventive medicine covers a wide range of medical practices. You can choose among a variety of career options from hands-on medical treatment for individuals to the examination of health factors that affect a community or particular population.

Educational Requirements
Preventive medicine mainly consists of three specialities. Doctors in public health and general preventive medicine aim to promote and maintain community health or prevention in specific populations. Disease prevention, such as immunizations or food and water safety, plays a role in public health and general preventive medicine. Occupational medicine focuses on work-related health, illness and disease. A preventive medicine specialist in the occupational field studies the physical, chemical and social environments of the workplace, including toxic exposures and health maintenance. Aerospace medicine covers the air and space flight industry. Practitioners examine the health of operating crews or passengers aboard air and space vehicles.

To become one you need to pursue 12th standard in the stream science, complete your MBBS and opt for MD or a diploma course that specializes in this field. Training under a community organization is recommended too.
